Dependency in the Medicine Cabinet

Presicription Drug Abuse among teens between the ages of 12-17 have risen significantly over the last decade. This rise in teen drug abuse has reached a new level. Prescription Medication such as Opiates (pain killers), Amphetamines (speed), and Depressants (downers). These drugs are abused more than any other illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines combined. The increase in abusing prescription medication is not seen as dangerous to teenagers than illicit street drugs. Reality is, prescription and OTC drugs and very dangerous, addicting, and can cause death. Most of the teens who abuse these drugs get them from friends, family, or find them in the Medicine cabinet. Parents who are concerned about teen drug use should safeguard all prescription and OTC medications and if prescribed should be dispensed. Over the Counter Medications have reached an all time high as well, some OTC medicines are now kept behind the pharmacy. OTC meds such as Antihistamines and Inhalers can be purchased easily and the dangers of these drugs are phenomenal.

thanks for reading my hub. this disease not only ruined my family but took my sister and brother from me forever, in my hub The Perfect Addict you can read about just a little of what PILLS can do. It saddens me about you son but be thankful that even though he is in jail, at least u know he is safe. You are right, television can sometimes make it appealing and it tells too much information.. Stay strong and know that we as parents and family members can do the best we can, it doesnt mattter, it still seems as though we will never win this war. You and yours will be in my prayers and I hope that your son realizes his demise and chooses help. God Bless.

Informative hub, fortunerep. The video was pretty good, but it sort of downplays drug dealers that sell to kids rather than showing that kids get drugs both at home and from dealers.

Michael Jackson had lorazepam in his system when he died. Like Elvis, he had a bunch of stuff. It's definitely true that prescription drugs kill more people than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined. Good hub. Thanks. Later!

They are now saying that prescription drug abuse is outpacing the use of illegal street drugs. The more informed you are, the better your chances at catching it early, great hub.

This is a great article. I think that for some people, it is much easier to become addicted to prescription pain killers than alcohol. You don't have to drink 4-5 drinks to feel really elated. When I was 15/16, I started getting terrible migraines and my doctor prescribed vicodin. I was on it for a long time and it made me feel really good and relaxed. One pill makes you feel a lot better than drinking too much. I was lucky to finally get off them, but I can see how they become a problem for so many. They're really cheap and so accesible, not to mention, easy to take.

Again, great article! Really important to raise awareness on this issue for parents as well as teens!

Last night I have read about high percantage of kids who are already on PRESCRIBED DRUGS as for bipolarity, ADD/ADHD, depression, hiperactivity....and of course kids are already addicted.

It is nothing strange, that the others abuse the same type of pills for the same or other purposes...

Thumbs up for your Hub
