Acrostic Poetry
Writing Acrostic Poetry is fun and easy. It can be profound, funny, sad or happy. When writing an Acrositc Poem the first letter of each line is a phrase or message when read in order. They can short and be the first letter or more difficult as the poem Valentine by Edgar Allen Poe in 1846 which spelled out the name of Frances Sargent Osgood in the first letter of the first line, the second letter of the second line, etc.
A Valentine Edgar Allan Poe (1848)
For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,
Brightly expressive as the twins of Leda,
Shall find her own sweet name, that, nestling, lies
Upon the page, enwrapped from every reader.
Search narrowly the lines! — they hold a treasure
Divine — a talisman — an amulet
That must be worn at heart. Search well the measure —
The words — the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!
And yet there is in this no Gordian knot
Which one might not undo without a sabre
If one could merely comprehend the plot.
Enwritten upon the leaf where now are peering
Eyes scintillating soul, there lie perdus
Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing
Of poets, by poets — as the name is a poet’s, too.
Its letters, although naturally lying
(Like the knight Pinto — Mendez Ferdinando —)
Still form a synonym for Truth —— Cease trying!
You will not read the riddle, though you do the best you can do.

Acrostic Poems for kids
Acrostic poems can be used as a tool to create an imagination in kids in writing with rules, other that the norm. It can be simple:
Shines brightly
Up in the Sky
Nice and Warm
Falling Leaves
Alot of Leaves
Long nights
Lots of wind

do you know how to write an acrostic poem for 'amundsen scott'?
I am really excited about this Hub of yours. Acrostic poems are fabulous techniques for working past writer's block, stimulating the mind in general, and encouraging kids to stretch their wings. I haven't thought of them too much in recent years, and now I know I'll get back to them. The EAP poem is out of this world...I'd never read it before.
Thanks for this great little gift.
This was cool Dori. Thanks for sharing. I have a few I've done years ago. It's fun and can be most difficult.
When I used to substitute teach i used to always keep this idea in my head for elementary school kids. You'd be surprised how many times you go into a classroom and there is not enough material in the lesson plan or no emergency lesson plan. I've been thinking about doing a hub on poetry but ever since my score took a hit from the 80s to the 60s after those hubs were flagged I am afraid to do ANYTHING. I guess I don't get enough traffic to stay at 75 and when you go under 75 hubpages cuts off something--don't recall what. Good for you though! Glad someone can afford to have fun with poetry in hubs!
I think this is a great way to encourage creativity in children and adults. I think this form of poetry is the best.
This is very creative as well as artistic... I don't think anyone can do this! You need to have a wide imagination. Thanks
How are you? I'd really like to give this one a try, Dori! Thanks so much for sharing this (I really like your avatar of Aaliyah by the way).
